Our Future Home
I have some extremely exciting news! Nolan and I are building our new home and can't wait to share the whole process with you right here! We are so excited about our new build, it really has been a long time coming! I've shared a few tid-bits on my Instagram already, but here is the full story to the start of our journey.
This build has been a work in progress and truly a labor of love for a very long time! Here's a little back story of how we got to this point. Nolan bought his house (now ours) when we were still dating a little over 5 years ago. At that point we had already been together a little over a year, and we picked out the house together which made it fun to picture our future life here. However, we always knew it would be a starter home for us. We have been searching for a new home for about three years. We almost bought two different homes, both of those ended up falling though which was extremely frustrating at the time but truly a blessing in disguise. After about 2 years of searching online, looking at homes (and those 2 houses that fell through) we continued to get more and more frustrated with what we saw. (Maybe I should add in here that we are both extremely picky, hence some of our frustrations.) At that point we decided to switch gears from looking at houses to looking for a lot/land to build on. Finding somewhere to build was no easy task to say the least.
We have spent a little over a year looking for somewhere to build. We knew what part of town we wanted to be in. But we also wanted a large lot, privacy, in a neighborhood, the lot facing the right direction, and so forth. See, we're picky. But we know what we like/want. After checking out several neighborhoods we finally found THE ONE! All the stars aligned and we finally found the perfect lot for us! In early April 2016 we reserved our new lot, Welcome to our 2 acres.
Now that we had our land picked out it was time to start the next difficult task in building, selecting our builder. Our new neighborhood consists of 11 lots all 2-11 acres and we are able to bring in our own builder. (some neighborhoods require you to work with certain builders they contract with and we had no interest in that, because again, we are very picky!) We met with SO many builders it's crazy. But this is such a huge investment we wanted to make sure we did our homework, gathered all our information, and wanted to find someone that was a good fit for us. After all you are working so closely with your builders for a year you want to feel comfortable and enjoy it! (anyone looking to build in the Kansas City area feel free to reach out, we still have our notes from our meetings and I am more that happy to share my thoughts)
In May we thought we had found our builder. We had had several meetings, had worked closely together to create a great plan but something was still off. So we went back to the drawing board and started our search again. In one weekend we met with 6 different builders, and then we found the one! We are so excited to be working with our builder, Madi Mali. We chose a completely custom builder which meant it was time to find an architect to work with to start creating our floor plan. We worked with our architect for several months going back and forth, making changes and tweaking the tiniest little details until it was perfect.
We officially closed on our lot/new build on October 14, 2016. A day we had been working so hard to get to for so long.
And on November 17th we broke ground!! We are officially underway and can't wait to watch everything come together!
And hello footings! We can see the house taking shape. Each stage is more exciting than the last.
This week we have a meeting with our builder to pick out our windows and after that we are picking out our appliances! Stay tuned for more house updates, the really exciting stuff is still to come!
